I started my environmental health career in Sutter County, a small rural county in Northern California. One of my duties was inspecting well seal installations. Which is to say the placement of the annular seal around the outside of a well casing (between the casing and borehole wall). This seal is intended to prevent the migration of surface and subsurface contaminants into deeper water strata.
I met many interesting people during my career. One of these was a well driller in Sutter County named Ted Herr. I can’t remember the context, but while inspecting one of his jobs he offered invaluable advice. Advice we should all heed…
The most important thing in life is to take care of your job. If you do that, the rest of your life might fall into place and go okay. No guarantees, but it gives you the best chance of that happening. If you don’t take care of your job, then everything else in your life is going to turn to shit. That is guaranteed.
H.T. “Ted” Herr
I’ve known many people who haven’t done what Mr. Herr advised. Without exception, the result is as he predicted.
